Wednesday mornings begin with Surgical Morbidity/Mortality Conference. All cases are discussed with participation from attendings, residents, and medical students. The cases are primarily presented by residents with discussion of relevant literature.

Surgical Grand Rounds

Following Surgical Morbidity/Mortality Conference is Surgical Grand Rounds. There are usually 2 talks: the 1st talk is on a general surgical topic, and the 2nd talk is on a sub-specialty. There are guest presenters and resident-led Grand Rounds as well.

Surgical Core Curriculum Conference

Basic Science Conference is a weekly course following Surgery Grand Rounds. The conference is structured to ensure a continuing education in basic and clinical sciences fundamental to surgery, focusing on advances in basic and translational research, technology, and critical thinking. Topics include but are not limited to surgical anatomy, cell biology, tissue homeostasis, wound healing, physiology, oncology, transplant, nutrition and immunology. Attendance is mandatory and this conference is considered protected time.

Journal Club

Moores Auditorium

Journal Club is held monthly and is also resident-led with attending back-up. The topics are selected by the research residents who prepare a yearly schedule in advance.

UCSD — Trauma Conference

Trauma Conference is held weekly on Tuesday afternoons and is open for all to attend. The discussion revolves around new literature in trauma and a discussion of interesting cases of the week.

UCSD — Vascular Pre-Op Conference

Vascular Pre-Op Conference is held on Thursday afternoons and is open for all to attend. The discussion revolves around the coming week's cases and a discussion of pertinent topics in vascular surgery.

UCSD — Tumor Board

Tumor Board is held in a simulcast between UCSD Hillcrest and UCSD La Jolla on Wednesday afternoons. The discussion is based on cases submitted the prior week and is held in partnership with the departments of Pathology, Hematology-Oncology, and Radiology.

VA — Tumor Board

Tumor Board is held on Tuesday afternoons. The discussion, similar to the conference at UCSD, is based on cases submitted the prior week and is held in partnership with the departments of Pathology, Hematology-Oncology, and Radiology.

VA — Pathology Conference

Pathology Conference is held on Thursday afternoons. The previous week's pathology results are discussed in a conference with participation from the department of General Surgery and Pathology.

VA — Vascular Conference

This conference is the VA Hospital equivalent of the Vascular Pre-Op Conference and is on Tuesday mornings. The previous week's and the upcoming week's cases are discussed.
