Our faculty, postdoctoral fellows, surgical trainees, and medical students are encouraged to exploit the Department's resources and UC San Diego's world-class research environment to collaborate with an extensive network of researchers locally, nationally and internationally to innovate and advance the care of our patients.
Mission
Our mission is to create a better tomorrow for patients with surgically oriented diseases by advancing new ideas, developing new surgical techniques, and deepening our understanding of the pathophysiology of surgical diseases.
Translational Science
We are at the forefront of efforts to translate our discoveries to the care of patients. In leveraging our findings in at the laboratory bench — via sophisticated biomedical informatic analyses, or in clinical trial — our faculty help turn discoveries into new surgical treatments and therapeutics, like developing new and safer operative approaches using fluorescence-guidance.
Clinical Research
Every year, our faculty members initiate new clinical trials — and complete existing clinical trials — that test ways of doing surgeries that cost less, have better outcomes, and are more reliable. Our faculty make significant strides towards improving the field for everyone using a combination of approaches that include: outreach, health services research, and robotics training.
Engineering Sciences
Unlike all other medical disciplines, surgery is uniquely positioned to exploit advances in all aspects of bioengineering — from their creation of new biodegradable materials that can be used for tissue repair and regeneration, to the deployment of new robots that optimize the deployment of surgical devices.
