Leadership

The first woman resident to enter the UC San Diego Department of Surgery was in 1973. Thirty-seven years later, in 2010, the UC San Diego Women in Surgery initiative was established to celebrate and reflect upon the nearly 4 decades of perseverance and tenacity demonstrated by women surgeons. Female residents represent approximately 50% of our general surgery program and about a 3rd of general surgery applicants.

It is the goal of our leadership to ensure that the challenges faced by these young surgeons are balanced with opportunities for leadership, scholarship, and personal growth.
