The Department of Surgery is deeply committed to educating surgeons of the future. The department offers fully accredited academic residency and fellowship training programs in a number of surgical specialties. 

Residency Programs

Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery

Directed by world authorities in pulmonary hypertension, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) and pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE).

Cardiothoracic surgeon

General Surgery

A comprehensive training program encompassing the spectrum of core general surgery and general surgery subspecialties, including cardiothoracic, transplant, oncology, vascular, colorectal, trauma and pediatric surgery.

Plastic Surgery

Educates and trains physicians in the art and science of plastic and reconstructive surgery, and develops a competent and responsible plastic surgeon with high moral and ethical character capable of functioning as an independent surgeon.

Fellowship Programs

Burn Fellowship

The Burn Fellowship teaches the advanced skills, knowledge, and human-touch qualities fellows need to build the foundation of a successful trauma and burn medicine practice. Our UC San Diego Regional Burn Center admitts over 400 patients each year with various levels of injury and hundreds more are treated on an out-patient basis.

Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery

The Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Fellowship is designed to train leaders in CT surgery. Our program is directed by world authorities in pulmonary hypertension, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) and pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE).

Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery Fellowship

The Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery Fellowship is a 1-year clinical program designed to provide a broad, but highly specialized experience. The fellow is exposed to all facets of craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, genetics/ dysmorphology, pediatric dermatology and oculoplastic surgery.

Burn surgeon

Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship

The MIS Fellowship trains general surgeons to become specialists and academic leaders in advanced minimally invasive surgical procedures and techniques, including advanced GI, colonic, bariatric, hepatobiliary, and diagnostic and therapeutic flexible endoscopic procedures. Our diverse and dedicated faculty guide fellows through pathophysiology, diagnosis, and advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic treatment of the esophagus, solid organs, morbid obesity and complex hernia care.

Pediatric Surgery Fellowship

The Pediatric Surgery Fellowship focuses on general, abdominal, thoracic, oncologic and trauma surgery in children and neonates. The program provides exposure to all aspects of pediatric general surgery, including patient evaluation, strategies for developing a therapeutic management plan, technical mastery of complex surgical procedures and perioperative care of the patient.

Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship provides exposure to complex surgical critical care and facilitates the development of skills to take on a leadership role. The program offers three clinical positions per year (PGY-6 and above).

Vascular Surgery Fellowship

The Vascular Surgery Fellowship trains general surgeons to become specialists and leaders in the discipline of vascular surgery. The program combines fundamental education in vascular disease with a diverse exposure to clinical patient care and vascular interventions.
