The Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery is a team of surgeons under the leadership of Michael Madani, MD. We are known throughout the world for the pioneering research and innovative surgical therapy of our group. Since 1989, when our program began, we have performed more than 30,000 major heart and lung operations.
Our Team
Meet our cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons, who perform routine cardiac and thoracic procedures, as well as provide advanced tertiary and quaternary care, frequently serving as a final referral center for patients with highly complex conditions.

Integrated Residency
The I-6 Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program at UC San Diego is designed to train individuals to become leaders in the discipline of cardiothoracic surgery. Our program strives to instill the knowledge, skills, clinical judgment and attitudes necessary for graduates to excel as cardiothoracic surgeons.
Fellowship
UC San Diego's Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Fellowship program is designed to train leaders in CT surgery. Over the two years of training, fellows achieve increasing levels of surgical experience and independence.
