About Us
Mission Statement
Our mission is to support professional development of women surgeons and raise gender awareness.
The first woman resident to enter the UC San Diego Department of Surgery was in 1973. Thirty-seven years later, in 2010, the UC San Diego Women in Surgery Lectureship was established to celebrate and reflect upon the nearly four decades of perseverance and tenacity demonstrated by women surgeons. Female residents represent approximately 50% of our general surgery program and about a third of general surgery applicants. It is the goal of our Committee to ensure that the challenges faced by these young surgeons are balanced with opportunities for leadership, scholarship, and personal growth.
