Research Symposium in Surgical Sciences

The Department of Surgery’s Annual Research Symposium in Surgical Sciences brings together the Department’s faculty, project scientists, residents, research fellows, post-doctoral scholars and medical students who are engaged and interested in the department’s research enterprise.

    The 2017 meeting, held on May 3rd, embraced the breadth and wide impact of surgical sciences: from research dissecting the molecular response to tissue injury and inflammation; to the deployment of next generation methods to enhance and accelerate repair and regeneration; to improving surgical outcomes through technological innovation, clinical research, clinical trials and health services research.  Read the program

    The meeting was headlined by Professor Allan D. Kirk , the David C. Sabiston, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Surgery, Pediatrics and Immunology at the Duke University School of Medicine. Professor Kirk will deliver the morning’s Grand Rounds lecture and in the evening, close a day of poster and oral presentations with a lecture on Science and the Surgeon . In his keynote address, Professor Kirk discussed the decline in funding for surgical research and suggested that the main impediment is incentives: “ The financial rewards of doing research are limited. And in surgery, the gap between the fiscal rewards of research and clinical practice is the widest. ”
