The Department of Surgery’s training programs allow for hands-on experience providing care for diverse populations and treating a wide range of conditions. With world-class facilities, surgical residents can take advantage of valuable training opportunities, from pediatric through geriatric procedures, including comprehensive experiences in hepatobiliary surgery, transplantation, vascular surgery, and advanced laparoscopic procedures. The program includes experience in community and VA-based care, which is crucial for surgeons interested in academic careers. Residents become equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to be competitive in the workforce.
UC San Diego Medical Center - Hillcrest
UC San Diego Medical Center - Hillcrest is an eleven-story, 440-bed hospital located on the UC San Diego Medical Center campus in the heart of San Diego. The Hillcrest hospital contains extensive diagnostic laboratories, a large and well-equipped emergency suite, a twenty-bed surgical intensive care unit, pediatric and neonatal intensive care units, a newly renovated interventional radiology, a thirteen-bed specialized burn intensive care unit, and eleven operating rooms. The patient care units consist of four-bed, two-bed, and single rooms.
UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center
Jacobs Medical Center is a 245-bed hospital built on the philosophy that when you are in a comfortable environment it is easier to heal. It is surrounded by scenic views of the rolling hills of the UC San Diego La Jolla campus. Jacobs Medical Center includes a 36-bed intensive care unit, 10 operating rooms and is connected to an emergency room at Sulpizo Cardiovascular Center.
Moores UC San Diego Cancer Center
The Moores UC San Diego Cancer Center is one of only 41 facilities nationwide designated by the National Cancer Institute as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. La Jolla Veterans Affairs Medical Center
The 355-bed La Jolla Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) is considered the most modern and best-equipped VA hospital in the country. It provides a broad spectrum of programs and services including the full range of surgical procedures. The La Jolla VAMC serves veterans residing in San Diego, Imperial, and southern San Bernardino counties. The professional staff consists entirely of full-time members of the UCSD faculty, and the chief of staff is an associate dean in the School of Medicine. An extensive outpatient program is provided at the VAMC and its satellite facilities at Mission Valley and El Centro, and in collaboration with two Veterans Centers. In addition to elaborate patient care facilities, it contains extensive research facilities. The VAMC is an integral part of the UC San Diego School of Medicine.
Kaiser Permanente Zion Medical Center
Kaiser Permanente began serving San Diego in 1967, and currently provides care for nearly 500,000 members throughout the county. The Medical Center has 392 licensed beds and a 56 bed Emergency Department. Our residents find an excellent experience in “bread and butter” general surgery encounter a true experience of community practice in this busy and challenging rotation in the fourth year.
Rady Children's Hospital
Rady’s Children's Hospital and Health Center is a 219-bed facility serving the inpatient needs of the majority of the children of San Diego County. The state-of-the-art hospital is located about 10 minutes from the UCSD Medical Center. The faculty of Rady’s Children’s Hospital provide our residents with hands on teaching in the operating room and the ward during the third year.
