The primary educational goal of the UC San Diego Plastic Surgery Program is to consistently educate and train physicians broadly in the art and science of plastic and reconstructive surgery as well as to develop a competent and responsible plastic surgeon with high moral and ethical character capable of functioning as an independent surgeon. Secondary goals include development of the spirit of inquiry, scholarship, community service, and lifelong learning. Read more about our program's Goals and Objectives.

The UC San Diego Plastic Surgery Program curriculum is designed to progressively enable   the resident to achieve these goals according to the guidelines set forth by the ACGME.     The rotation assignments provide the residents with a comprehensive experience in all the required clinical areas incorporating progressive independence with direct faculty supervision. The residents obtain the clinical and cognitive skills that enable them to independently evaluate, diagnose, formulate and execute surgical (and non-surgical) treatment plans. The residents are directly evaluated on their pre-operative, operative, and post-operative patient management.

The Didactic Curriculum of the Program provides systematic coverage of all core topics in plastic surgery and includes interpretation of the plastic surgery literature. This is achieved by weekly teaching conferences, reading assignments, quizzes, journal club, morbidity and mortality, and mock oral board exam conference. Residents are responsible for weekly case and topic presentations during teaching conferences which is one method of ongoing evaluation and assessment of the progression of their cognitive, clinical skills, and professional competencies. Cognitive skills are also evaluated by their performance on the plastic surgery in-service examination and ultimately by the certifying and qualifying examinations administered by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

The UC San Diego Plastic Surgery Program emphasizes the importance of scholarly activity and the ability to design and implement research studies. Regularly scheduled research conferences are held to facilitate resident participation in research activities with Faculty mentorship and to help residents in the preparation for presentations or manuscript submission.

The development and maintenance of positive and appropriate relationships with faculty, patients, hospital and office personnel is emphasized. The residents undergo 360 degree evaluations in an effort to obtain the highest levels of performance in the areas of professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills, system-based practice, practice based learning, and patient care.
