Categorical Internship/First-Year Residency in Surgery

The surgical internship and first year residency in surgery are combined into a single year for which dual credit is given. The year involves approximately six months of general surgery, five one month rotations to the surgical specialties, and four weeks of vacation. The specialty rotations, which are assigned according to individual preference and service needs, include opportunities for experience in cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, otolaryngology, trauma, and urology. Both and the VA Medical Center are utilized for training.

The responsibilities during the first post­ M.D. year involve the total care of all patients under the supervision of the faculty and senior resident staff. The duties include working up patients, prescribing and administering treatment, and participating in operations. Operative responsibilities are assigned according to progress in training and ability. The intern participates in a large number of teaching exercises at the bedside and in formal conferences and shares with the senior resident staff the responsibility for presenting cases at these activities. The categorical internship/first­year residency in surgery, or comparable training at another institution, is a prerequisite for further residency training in all of the surgical specialties.
