About Us
The Department of Surgery at the University of California, San Diego, is world renowned for its high-quality patient care, academic excellence, and breakthrough research.
We provide all types of surgical services, from routine procedures such as gall bladder removal to extremely delicate and specialized cancer surgeries, burn and trauma treatment, and complex reconstructive surgery. Our patients come to us from all over San Diego and Imperial Counties, the region, and the nation, as well as other countries around the world.
As part of an academic medical center that provides specialized medical services to our community, we in UCSD Surgery rise to meet health care challenges that affect individuals in San Diego, the region, and the world. We are also a top medical research department, pursuing studies of the causes and treatment of hundreds of diseases and disorders.

The Department of Surgery adheres to the mission and goals established by the UCSD Medical Center. In addition, the UCSD Department of Surgery, as part of the only general acute care institution in San Diego and Imperial Counties serving as the primary teaching hospital for the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, has three primary missions it must fulfill:
